children were
with them; Francis, Elizabeth, Marie(Mary), John.

5) William french was born in Halstead, Essex
County. England March 15, 1603.

6) He was a tailor and came to America with the Rev.
Thomas Shepard in the "Defence" in 1635, bringing
his wife Elizabeth and four children.

7) He settled at Cambridge and in 1652 was one of 13
petitioners for the spearation of Billerica, formerly
Shawshin, from Cambridge.

8) In 1647 he was Licutenant and afterward Captain
of Militia.

9) In 1659 he was authorized to soleminize marriages within
Baillerica and Chelmsford.

10) He was chosen as a slectman 1660-4 and 1670-3.

11) "17 December 1660 Leftent Will French is chosen deputy
for this Town for the Next Genrl Court and no longer."
Two days later he was in his seat at Boston, the first Deputy
from Billerica. He was chosen again in 1663. In 1661 the town
appoint Lieut. ffrench, John Sen.
and Will Gay to sett in the Deacon's seat.

12) He was a man of some education, and the author
of the famous tract entitled "Strength out o f weakness"
published in London and reprinted by the Boston
Historical Society.

13) His wife died March 31, 1668, and he married
May 6, 1669, Mary Lathrop of Barnstable, dau. of ??? and widow of
John Stearns of Billerica.

15) Arrived aboard the Ship DEFENCE of London,
Edward Bostock, Master. She sailed from London about
the last of July (1635) and arrived at Boston October 8,
with about one hundred passengers.
